All our radars are of the stand-alone type using Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW). The distance (ullage) between the antenna and the surface of the liquid is measured through the propagation of the FMCW signal.
An embedded data processor is then able to compute the distance with high accuracy.
The calculated ullage in millimeters is then directly sent to the cargo control room.
A proven technology
Honeywell Marine Solutions is one of the major players on the market for systems using level measurement radars.
In 1992, Honeywell Marine Solutions has developed his first TA840 radar with a high-profile partner, namely THALES (formerly Thomson-CSF Detexis), a world reference in radar systems.
In collaboration with Enraf Terminal Automation two other radars have been launched: the EM540 for inland waterways vessels and the EM940 for sea going tankers. Honeywell Marine Solutions thus meets all applications for tankers (chemical tankers, bitumen tankers, product tankers) and barges.
With more than 6000 radar units in operation, Honeywell Marine Solutions offers the most reliable technology for each specific application, complying with the latest maritime regulations.
An ideal concept of marine radar
Coming directly from our long maritime experience, efficiency and reliability are the main features of Honeywell Marine Solutions' radars. They include:
a planar antenna associated with embedded electronics and a data processing unit
a stainless steel housing easy to handle and withstanding the roughest conditions.
a wide beam compatible with important trim and list during loading,
a distributed processing architecture where each radar controls the measurement of its own tank level.
an out-put signal of the RS485 type including level temperature and pressure.
Radar EM940: the best solution for tanker application
The EM940 radar is particularly suited for tanker sophisticated applications such as chemicals, products, bitumen...
The EM940 is associated to two specific IS racks: the TA3840C dedicated to "communication" and the TA3840S for power supply.
The radar measurement head features a very compact and light design.
The use of an intrinsically safe digital signal transmission between the radar and the central monitoring system provides for an easy integration of the EM940 Radar into any type of control system.
The EM940 is compliant with certification rules and regulations issued by international classification societies such as: ABS, Bureau Veritas, DNV, GL, Lloyds...

Radar EM540: the best solution for tanker application
The 8" EM540 radar is especially designed to be integrated within a dedicated cargo monitoring system for inland vessels. It may be used for other simple tankers. The EM540 radar is based on the use of smart sensors including microprocessors performing signal processing.
In addition to transmitting tank level, pressure, and temperature data to the central monitoring system, it offers such capabilities as self-diagnostics, self-monitoring and remote configuring.
The use of an intrinsically safe two-way digital signal transmission, between the radar and the central monitoring system, provides for an easy integration of the EM540 Radar into any type of control system.
